Poetry Appreciation Campaign
Journal Entry: Thu Jan 24, 2008, 1:07 AM
So i've realized the lack of appreciation of poetry lately, not just here (though it did bring this atrocity to my attention) but in life in general. People analyze poetry, look at the poets' pasts, pick it apart until nothing is left, but few people actually sit and read poetry for the sole unadulterated purpose of reading it. Is it because people rely so much on eyesight (or, rather, eyecandy) that the words and tender quiet phrases are lost in the sea of color and photoshopped blemish-coverings that people list as art? Is it because people simply don't have the time to contemplate a deeper mening than a piece of fanart that took less thought than it would have to watch the show itself? Or perhaps are people avoinding something that they just don't want to hear about? Maybe things that really matter, when adressed so personally, are too painful for the heart and mind to handle, so instead lifeless art that is indeed beutiful in structure yet lacks in thought and function serves as a downgraded substitute. Who knows?
I also notice that there are a very few poets who deserve the title. (This is in my opinion, of course.) There is no correct definition of poetry except in it's most basic structure that separates it from prose. However, I am one to believe that pieces of art should not just serve as eyecandy, should not just be good for some ooh and ahhs and favorite icons, but rather inform the world of manners that deserve to be looked at. Even, or perhaps especially, the smallest manners possibly imagined can be important. Some people even write and draw these highly metaphoric pieces that are deep to them, if to no one else, but because it's just a sketch or a simple verse no one gives it even a passing glance. If they're like me, that's not very encouraging or inspiring.
So, I propse this to the few, if any, reading this rant. Read just one poem on here once a week. Just find one poem--short, long, wahtever--and just read it. Comment on it, anything, just as long as you did it. I think you'd make a lot of people feel the importance they deserve to feel as artists in their own right.
